The Anatomy of a Necktie

iStock_000017472921SmallNeckties come in all shapes, sizes, and styles, but their anatomy is basically all the same. We all know what a necktie is, but do we truly understand what goes into designed and manufacturing this sartorial must-haves. This Necktie Emporium’s Anatomy of the Necktie:

  • Shell: The shell is the outermost part of the necktie. The shell is the part of the necktie you see the most, and is designed to be durable and flexible to help maintain its shape.
  • Seam: Believe it or not, but neckties are constructed from 3-4 pieces of material that are then sewn together. He seam is usually located halfway along the length of the necktie. When tied correctly, the knot is never visible. This is another benefit of opting for a clip on tie.
  • Neck: The neck is self-explanatory. This is the middle section of the necktie that wraps around your neck. This part is of course missing from a clip on tie, but our zipper ties and traditional ties all feature durable necks.
  • Interlining: Between the folds of the outer shell exists the interlining. The interlining helps give the tie its shape and keeps the tie durable and in good condition.
  • Keeper Loop: The keeper loop is the piece of fabric on the back of your tie that holds the small part of the tie. Its main goal is to keep the tail of the tie out of sight.
  • Tail: The tail is the narrow end of the tie that hangs behind the larger end when tied.
  • Blade: The blade is the main lower section of the necktie.
  • Tipping: Tipping is the fabric that is sewn onto the back of the tip of the necktie.
  • Margin: This is the distance from the edge of the blade to the tipping.
  • Slip Stich: The slip stitch is what keeps the tie together. It is sewn loosely to prevent breakage from repeated knotting.
