Men’s Style Rules: Break the Rules

Tuesday, September 30th, 2014

When people think of menswear it’s not uncommon to immediately think of a conservative suit and tie, but there is much moreiStock_000018503976Large to style than meets the eye. Below are a few antiquated rules that you can break and still look 100% put together and dapper.

  • Mix patterns! Do you have a patterned clip-on tie? Wear it with a plaid shirt.
  • It used to be said that belt should match your shoes. However, forget this rule. It’s still important to keep in mind that a black belt and brown shoes isn’t a good combination, but colored belts can really keep an outfit interesting, and look great with any type of shoe. Consider a white roped belt in the summer for a nautical vibe.
  • Sockless is in! You don’t need to wear socks with that suit. Showing a look ankle is very modern and super fashion forward. Take a peak in your favorite men’s magazine to see what we mean.
  • Neckties do not need to be subtle! Patterns are in, and it’s time to start adding some to your wardrobe. A necktie can be a very stylish statement piece.
  • Boots can be worn with a suit or with a pair of jeans. Try breaking the rules and adding a pair of rugged boots to your suit.
  • No white between Labor Day and Memorial Day? We say go for it! Who made this rule anyway?

When it comes to flawless style, every detail counts! From your necktie to your socks, every detail goes noticed. If you’re new to the world of style or are a seasoned veteran, we’re here to help you polish your appearance. Below are a few rules and tips when it comes to keeping your sock game on point.

Business socks

  • The key to coordinating your socks to your outfit is to go with colors that contrast each other, but still look great together. Think grey socks with navy pants, and vice versa.
  • Never wear athletic socks with dress shoes! Actually, there is never really the need to wear white socks at all, unless you are indeed doing something athletic. Instead, stick with solid colors and patterns. Polka dot socks are fun and can be worn casually and formally.
  • Shorter pants are making a big impact in the men’s fashion world, and exposed socks and ankle are very popular. If you want to try this new trend, make sure your socks are worth showing. Fun patterns or unique socks can really make or break an outfit, especially if your socks are visible to the world.
  • The old rule of thumbs when wearing a suit is to match your socks to your pants, although this is an antiquated rule, it is still foolproof. If you don’t want to be too exciting or fashion forward you can always go with the old rule.

There are many different types and styles of neckties, but there are truly only a handful of ties that you should have in your wardrobe. These are 5 types of neckties that will fit into any man’s wardrobe for any situation:

  1. The navy tie- A navy tie is the perfect option for formal and informal events. Whether you wear a tie in the office with your fellow cubicle mates, or choose to wear a tie for a night out on the town, you cannot go wrong with a versatile and always stylish navy blue tie.
  2. The black tie- Perhaps more reserved for events that are a little more formal than not, a black tie is the most popular menswear accessory. Black ties look great with a variety of different outfits, and can be dressed up or down depending on the width of the tie. More fashion forward oriented men would be best off with a skinny black tie as opposed to a classic and full width tie.
  3. The patterned tie- patterned ties are a great way to break up the monotony of an ordinary or plain outfit. Patterns have a lot of personality and can look great in formal situations and also informal situations.
  4. The cotton/wool tie- Not necessarily a color, but cotton ties are the quintessential summer accessory. Cotton is lightweight and cool, and looks great with a pair of jeans or a suit. On the opposite side, a wool tie is the perfect quintessential tie for cooler months.
  5. The bowtie- Bowties are making a big come back in men’s style, and for good reason. The bowtie can help exude class and elegance, while also keeping you stylish and cool.
