Men’s Style Rules: Break the Rules

Tuesday, September 30th, 2014

When people think of menswear it’s not uncommon to immediately think of a conservative suit and tie, but there is much moreiStock_000018503976Large to style than meets the eye. Below are a few antiquated rules that you can break and still look 100% put together and dapper.

  • Mix patterns! Do you have a patterned clip-on tie? Wear it with a plaid shirt.
  • It used to be said that belt should match your shoes. However, forget this rule. It’s still important to keep in mind that a black belt and brown shoes isn’t a good combination, but colored belts can really keep an outfit interesting, and look great with any type of shoe. Consider a white roped belt in the summer for a nautical vibe.
  • Sockless is in! You don’t need to wear socks with that suit. Showing a look ankle is very modern and super fashion forward. Take a peak in your favorite men’s magazine to see what we mean.
  • Neckties do not need to be subtle! Patterns are in, and it’s time to start adding some to your wardrobe. A necktie can be a very stylish statement piece.
  • Boots can be worn with a suit or with a pair of jeans. Try breaking the rules and adding a pair of rugged boots to your suit.
  • No white between Labor Day and Memorial Day? We say go for it! Who made this rule anyway?

Old timey and classic style is the most commonly seen wardrobe choice among lawyers of all ages and tenure. However, you don’t need to settle for the antiquated norm! At Necktie Emporium, we carry a large selection of stylish and handsome neckties in varying colors, patterns and styles. There are no set rules that must be followed when deciding on a professional wardrobe for your new law career, but with any necktie, it’s best to follow these 3 simple rules:

  • Keep it long! A necktie should hang just so the tip covers the top of your belt. At necktie Emporium, we carry a large selection of extra long ties, for the taller man.
  • Keep it simple! Sometimes a neutral and simple necktie stands out more than a loud and abrasive pattern.
  • Keep it snug! Can’t tie the perfect knot? Clip-on ties always have the perfect knot and look great. A proper necktie should be pulled tight to cover the top button of your shirt.

The Anatomy of a Necktie

Thursday, April 10th, 2014

iStock_000017472921SmallNeckties come in all shapes, sizes, and styles, but their anatomy is basically all the same. We all know what a necktie is, but do we truly understand what goes into designed and manufacturing this sartorial must-haves. This Necktie Emporium’s Anatomy of the Necktie:

  • Shell: The shell is the outermost part of the necktie. The shell is the part of the necktie you see the most, and is designed to be durable and flexible to help maintain its shape.
  • Seam: Believe it or not, but neckties are constructed from 3-4 pieces of material that are then sewn together. He seam is usually located halfway along the length of the necktie. When tied correctly, the knot is never visible. This is another benefit of opting for a clip on tie.
  • Neck: The neck is self-explanatory. This is the middle section of the necktie that wraps around your neck. This part is of course missing from a clip on tie, but our zipper ties and traditional ties all feature durable necks.
  • Interlining: Between the folds of the outer shell exists the interlining. The interlining helps give the tie its shape and keeps the tie durable and in good condition.
  • Keeper Loop: The keeper loop is the piece of fabric on the back of your tie that holds the small part of the tie. Its main goal is to keep the tail of the tie out of sight.
  • Tail: The tail is the narrow end of the tie that hangs behind the larger end when tied.
  • Blade: The blade is the main lower section of the necktie.
  • Tipping: Tipping is the fabric that is sewn onto the back of the tip of the necktie.
  • Margin: This is the distance from the edge of the blade to the tipping.
  • Slip Stich: The slip stitch is what keeps the tie together. It is sewn loosely to prevent breakage from repeated knotting.

Mistakes to Avoid When Wearing a Tie

A necktie is supposed to help make you appear put together and dapper, but there are many faux pas people make when wearing a necktie. Here are common mistakes many men make when wearing a necktie, and how to avoid them:

  • Poorly tied: A poorly tied necktie is not excusable. When you don’t properly tie your tie, you look sloppy and not put together. Clip-on ties and zipper ties always have the perfect knot, and can ensure your tie looks great every day. If you struggle with tying the perfect knot, why not make the switch?
  • The too short necktie: At NecktieEmporium.com, we carry a variety of different length neckties for the tall man and the short. The perfect tie should hit just above the belt, and not be any higher or lower. Avoid the poorly sized tie by shopping Necktie Emporium.
  • Clashing colors: Mixing patterns is an art and can be done, but there are certain things that do not work together! Always stick with neutrals and compatible colors when trying to think outside of the box when getting dressed.
  • Wrinkled or stained neckties: Do we really have to address why this should be avoided?
  • Wrong width: Some outfits look just plain bad with the wrong width tie. We carry a selection of different widths for every man.
  • The wrong tie for the occasion: Wearing an informal tie to a formal event or vice versa is a huge faux pas.

  • Double Breasted Jackets: Popular during the 30s, the double breasted jacket screams vintage gentleman.
  • Cuff Links: Add some pep to your overall look with a beautiful pair of cuff links. Formal, unique, and handsome, snag a pair that can be worn with any look.

  • Black Tie Creative: A variation on black tie that allows you to get a little creative. Keep the general black tie rule in mind, but don’t settle for the classic back tuxedo.
